Water, Thoughtfully Preserved: A More Sustainable Way of Living at InterContinental Dubai Marina

What if the future of luxury hospitality was not about using more, but about using better? At InterContinental Dubai Marina, this question is shaping the way we approach one of the world’s most precious resources: water. Through thoughtful innovation and responsible engineering, we are finding new ways to reduce consumption, recover resources and preserve the quality of the guest experience.

As part of IHG Hotels & Resorts’ Journey to Tomorrow, our commitment to creating a more responsible future is brought to life through the everyday choices we make across our hotel. Water conservation is an important part of this journey, and in a destination where every drop matters, it is a responsibility we take seriously.

This World Water Week, we are taking a closer look at what responsible luxury means, and how thoughtful innovation can help us preserve one of the world's most precious resources without compromising the comfort and experience of our guests.

Rethinking everyday luxury

Sustainable hospitality often begins with the details guests may never notice.

Across our hotel, water-saving technologies have been thoughtfully integrated into the everyday experience. Our guest rooms are fitted with Blu rain showerheads and handheld showers, designed to provide a satisfying shower experience while using considerably less water. Installed across 328 hotel apartments and public areas, this initiative has contributed to an estimated 41% reduction in water consumption.

Water aerators on guest room faucets and sensor-operated taps in public restrooms further help us reduce unnecessary consumption. By maintaining a strong water flow while using less water, aerators have reduced faucet flow from 9 litres per minute to 6 litres per minute, while sensor taps prevent water from running when it is not needed.

These may seem like small changes. Across a hotel, however, small changes become meaningful impact.

Sustainability beyond what guests see

Some of our most important water-saving initiatives take place behind the scenes.

Cooling towers are among the largest water consumers within hotel operations. To improve their efficiency, we have upgraded the cooling tower fins and installed high-performance drift eliminators, helping maximise heat transfer while reducing water lost through evaporation and drift. The result is a more efficient cooling system, reduced water consumption and improved overall building performance.

But water conservation does not stop at using less. It also means asking how water that has already been used can be given a second life.

Giving water a second life

Through our integrated water recovery system, pool backwash water is captured and reused for landscape irrigation, while air-conditioning condensate is collected, treated and redirected for cooling tower make-up and irrigation water storage.

Together, these solutions save an average of 600–700 imperial gallons of water every day, reducing our reliance on potable water, supporting more sustainable irrigation and reducing wastewater discharge.

It is a more circular approach to water management: recovering what might otherwise be lost, and finding new purposes for it.

The future of responsible luxury

At InterContinental Dubai Marina, sustainability is not separate from the art of living well. It is part of it.

Through Journey to Tomorrow, IHG Hotels & Resorts has set out a long-term vision for a more responsible future. At the property level, that vision becomes tangible through the technologies we invest in, the resources we conserve, and the choices we make every day.

The future of luxury hospitality is not simply about creating beautiful experiences. It is about creating them thoughtfully, considering the resources behind every detail, investing in smarter solutions, and ensuring that comfort and responsibility can coexist.

From a shower in the morning to the greenery surrounding our spaces, every interaction with water is an opportunity to make a difference. Because true luxury is not only about having more. It is about knowing what is worth preserving.
